Finding the home row without looking

Everything in touch typing hangs off one idea: your hands have a home they can return to by feel, so your eyes never have to check where they are. On a standard keyboard, the left hand rests on A, S, D and F, and the right hand rests on J, K, L and the semicolon. Both thumbs sit over the space bar.

The F and J keys carry small raised bumps or ridges. They exist for exactly this purpose: you should be able to drop your hands onto the keyboard from anywhere, feel for those two bumps with your index fingers, and know without looking that all eight fingers are correctly placed. Practise that landing on its own for a minute or two before you practise anything else. It is the single mechanical skill the rest depends on.

From home position, every other key is defined as a movement away from a specific finger's anchor and back to it. The return matters as much as the reach. A finger that wanders and stays wandered has lost its reference point, and the next key it presses becomes a guess.

Which finger owns which key

The assignment below is the conventional one taught by typing courses for a standard US QWERTY keyboard. Treat it as a convention rather than a law of nature — it is a sensible division of labour that spreads the work evenly and keeps every reach short, not a finding from a controlled study.

Two things are worth noticing in that table. The index fingers carry twice the load of any other finger, because each of them owns two columns rather than one — which is why the T-G-B and Y-H-N reaches are the ones beginners most often fumble. And the right little finger is responsible for an unreasonable pile of punctuation, Enter and Shift, which is why it is the finger most likely to drag your right hand out of position.

Shift, and why you use the opposite hand

Capitals are typed with the Shift key on the opposite side from the letter. A capital T, typed by the left index finger, uses the right Shift; a capital P, typed by the right little finger, uses the left Shift. Using the same-side Shift forces one hand to stretch across two rows at once and pulls it off its anchor, which is exactly the thing home-row discipline exists to prevent.

This is the habit that most often survives incompletely. Plenty of otherwise fluent touch typists have one same-side Shift they never fixed, and it shows up as a recurring error on one specific capital letter. If your results consistently break on the same capital, that is usually why.

Posture, shoulders and wrists

The free, credible guidance here comes from OSHA's computer workstations eTool, and it is short enough to act on immediately: put the keyboard directly in front of you, keep your shoulders relaxed with your elbows close to your body, and keep your wrists straight and in line with your forearms rather than bent up, down or to either side while you type. OSHA also recommends taking a five-minute break from computer tasks every hour, plus brief micro-pauses to look away, stretch or walk.

The reason this belongs in a touch-typing guide rather than in a separate wellness aside is that posture and technique are the same problem. Wrists resting on the desk edge while you type force the fingers to reach from a bent position, and a hand that is anchored on the desk instead of hovering over the home row cannot make the T-G-B reach without dragging. Correct hand position is the ergonomic advice and the speed advice at once.

A realistic learning path

What follows is an ordering, not a schedule. No published dataset measures how long any of these stages takes, and anyone quoting you a number of hours is guessing — the reasoning is set out in how long does it take to learn touch typing?. What is predictable is the sequence and what each stage feels like from the inside.

  1. Anchoring. You practise finding home row by feel and typing the eight home keys without looking. It feels trivially easy and slightly pointless. It is neither, and skipping it is why later stages collapse.
  2. Letters only, eyes up. You type real words using the full assignment above, without looking down, and your speed falls off a cliff. This stage feels genuinely bad: you will be slower than your old hunt-and-peck method, possibly much slower, and the temptation to glance down is constant. This is where nearly everyone quits, and it is the only stage that must be endured rather than optimised.
  3. Capitals, punctuation and the number row. Letters start to flow, and then a comma or a capital yanks your hand off its anchor and the flow stops. The reaches, not the letters, are the real content of touch typing, and they need separate deliberate practice.
  4. Rebuilding speed. You can now type without looking, accurately, and it is still slower than you want. Nothing is wrong. You are waiting for the movements to stop requiring attention, and attention is the thing that costs time.
  5. It stops being a project. You notice one day that you have not thought about your hands in a week. There is no ceremony to this stage; you find out afterwards that it happened.

Expect the accuracy dip in stage two to be worse than the speed dip, and let it be. Accuracy recovers first and pulls speed along behind it, because on a net-WPM test the correct characters are the score.

What it buys you, and what it does not

The dependable return on touch typing is attention, not a multiplier. When your eyes never leave the text, you stop losing your place, you catch errors as they appear rather than three words later, and the mechanics of typing stop competing with whatever you were actually trying to write. That benefit is real, it is immediate once the habit forms, and it does not require you to be fast.

What the evidence does not support is a promised speed gain. In the largest published typing study, participants who had taken a formal typing course showed similar speeds, similar hand use and similar error rates to those who never had — the researchers attributed this to modern keyboards needing far less force than typewriters did, which lets self-taught typists using fewer than ten fingers keep up. If you already type quickly and comfortably with six fingers and no formal technique, the honest advice is that you may have little to gain and a painful stage two to get through.

Practising it on Keyboardo

  • Other languages — French and Arabic, the latter with full right-to-left support — break the muscle memory of familiar English letter patterns and expose which of your reaches are genuinely learned.

Pressing Tab at any point restarts with fresh words, so an attempt you are unhappy with costs nothing to abandon. When you are ready to measure rather than practise, take a timed test with the toggles off, and fold it into a repeatable loop using a practice routine.
