How to position your keyboard

The most useful free guidance on this comes from the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration, whose Computer Workstations eTool has a section on keyboards specifically. Three of its recommendations do most of the work, and each one fails in a particular, recognisable way.

Directly in front of you

OSHA's first instruction is to put the keyboard directly in front of you. This is easy to fail without noticing, because the usual cause is something else on the desk: a mouse, a second laptop, a notebook you keep referring to. A keyboard sitting even a hand's width off centre turns every keystroke into a small reach across the body, and it is a reach you then hold for hours at a time.

Shoulders relaxed, elbows close to the body

The posture OSHA describes has the shoulders relaxed and the elbows close to the body rather than winged out to the sides. Elbows drift outward when the keyboard is too high, too far away, or wide enough that the number pad pushes the typing area off to the left. The shoulder half of it tends to fail under concentration rather than under bad furniture — shoulders creep upward while you are focused and stay there until something reminds you.

Wrists straight and in line with the forearms

This is the specific one, and it rules out three bad positions at once: OSHA says the wrists should be straight and in line with the forearms, and should not bend up or down or to either side during keyboard use.

Bending up is the common one, and the usual culprit is the pair of fold-out feet on the back of the keyboard, which tilt the board towards you and push the wrists into extension. Bending sideways happens when the hands stay parked in place and the fingers stretch for distant keys instead of the whole hand moving. Resting the wrists on the desk edge while actually typing tends to produce both at once, along with pressure on the underside of the wrist.

Why posture matters, mechanically

OSHA does describe a mechanism, and it is worth understanding rather than taking on faith. Repetitive keying combined with awkward wrist postures produces contact stress, and tendons and their sheaths can rub against bone and ligaments, which can lead to irritation and fraying. That is how OSHA frames the risk from keyboard work: tendon and tendon sheath injuries arising from posture and repetition.

Notice what that framing does not do. It describes a musculoskeletal mechanism and gives posture guidance without asserting that typing causes any specific named condition. That distinction is not lawyerly caution — it is the actual state of the evidence, which the next section covers.

How often to take a break

OSHA's work-rest guidance is a five-minute break from computer tasks every hour, supplemented by short micro-pauses through the hour — a few seconds to look away from the screen, stretch, or stand up and walk.

The two are not interchangeable, and it is worth knowing which is which. The hourly break is long enough to change your posture completely and let your eyes refocus at a different distance. The micro-pause exists because the smallest useful intervention is measured in seconds and can be taken without abandoning what you are doing. If you are only going to manage one of them, the micro-pause is the easier habit to keep, precisely because it costs nothing.

What the evidence says about typing and carpal tunnel syndrome

The popular claim that typing causes carpal tunnel syndrome is not supported by the epidemiological literature. A systematic review by Thomsen, Gerr and Atroshi, published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders in 2008, examined eight epidemiological studies of computer mouse and keyboard use and concluded that there is insufficient epidemiological evidence that computer work causes carpal tunnel syndrome. The reviewers also noted that all eight of those studies had one or more limitations — imprecise exposure or outcome assessment, low statistical power, or potentially serious biases.

That finding is easy to over-read in both directions, so it is worth being exact about what it says. "Insufficient evidence that computer work causes CTS" is not the same statement as "computer work does not cause CTS", and it is certainly not a promise that your wrists are fine. It means that the studies which exist are not good enough to establish the causal link that popular writing treats as settled.

What survives the review untouched is everything in the sections above. Awkward posture, sustained static loading and repetitive movement are recognised musculoskeletal risk factors, and OSHA describes them as such without claiming that typing causes carpal tunnel syndrome. That is the line worth holding: getting your posture and your breaks right is worth doing on its own merits, and a specific diagnosis is not something a typing website is in any position to hand out.

When to see a clinician

Plainly: Keyboardo is a typing test, and nothing on this page is medical advice, a diagnosis, or a substitute for either. If you have pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in your hands, wrists or forearms — particularly if it persists, if it wakes you at night, or if it does not settle when you stop typing — that is a conversation to have with a doctor or a physiotherapist. It is not a conversation to have with a website, and self-diagnosing from typing-site articles is a bad idea, this one included.

The same applies in the moment. If something hurts while you are practising, stop practising. There is no typing result worth working through pain for, and the whole point of a personal best is that it will still be there next week.

Do ergonomic keyboards help?

Nobody can give you a sourced number, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does. There is no credible published figure for split, tented, contoured or mechanical keyboards making people type faster, and none for them preventing repetitive strain injury. Both claims are extremely common on product pages and neither has a study behind it.

What can honestly be said is smaller and more useful. The mechanical argument for a split or tented board is that it lets your hands sit closer to the angle your forearms naturally hold, which makes the straight-wrist position OSHA recommends easier to maintain without conscious effort. That is a claim about geometry, not about injury rates, and it is as far as the reasoning legitimately goes. Beyond that, comfort is genuinely subjective, preferences vary enormously between people, and the only reliable test is trying one for a while. Wanting a keyboard that feels better to you is a perfectly good reason to buy it. A percentage on the box is not.

Practising without making it worse

A few things that follow from the guidance above, rather than from any study about typing tests in particular:

  • A typing test rewards sustained speed, which is exactly the condition that encourages a tense, static hand and a raised shoulder. Check both between tests rather than during one.
  • Practice is a natural home for the micro-pause, because the unit is already short: a 60-second test ends by itself, and the gap before you start the next one is the pause.
  • There is no researched optimum practice length, so the useful limit is comfort rather than a number. Stop when your hands ask you to, not when a target says you may.
  • Zen mode, available from the mode bar on the test page, has no timer and no target text. It is the one mode on the site that is not asking you to hurry.

None of that will make you faster, and it is not meant to. It is here because a typing habit you can keep for years is worth more than any individual result, and because the guidance it rests on is free, credible, and takes about a minute to act on.
